Week 12 Waiver Wire Hitters

Waiver wire hitters to add for week 12 of fantasy baseball.

Rowdy Tellez (1B/DH – Toronto Blue Jays)

Ownership: Yahoo 2% ESPN 1% CBS 13%

Toronto first baseman Rowdy Tellez flashed some potential in 23 games last season batting .314 with four home runs. Tellez has been mostly disappointing this season but there are some underlying metrics to like in his profile, like the 40% hard hit rate and 37.5% fly ball rate. Tellez has hit an ugly .222 this season but actually has a .313 batting average with three home runs in 48 plate appearances against left handed pitching. This week Toronto has a full seven game schedule, with five of those games expected to come against lefty starters, so Tellez could be a viable streaming hitter option just that is available just about everywhere.

Bryan Reynolds (OF – Pittsburgh Pirates)

Ownership: Yahoo 30% ESPN 24% CBS 48%

All Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds has done since his call up is hit with a .364/.415/.574 slash line in 49 games this year. Not known as much of a power hitter before, Reynolds looks to be growing into some pop with ten home runs between AAA and MLB this year. His 49.2% hard hit ranks in the top 86th percentile of the league. He won’t hit .364 all year with a strikeout percentage over 20% and a BABIP of .454 but even his xBA of .304 indicates he should continue to hit well. This week the Pirates have five games, all five expected to come against left handed pitching. Reynolds has hit .372 against left handed pitching this year and is one of the hottest hitters in the league with a .408 average over the last two weeks.

Garrett Cooper (OF – Miami Marlins)

Ownership: Yahoo 24% ESPN 10% CBS 35%

Miami Marlins outfielder Garrett Cooper is another hitter in the midst of a hot stretch with a .413 average over the last two weeks, good for sixth best in the league. Cooper has hit .295/.380/.482 in 32 games this season. The .342 BABIP and 43.5% hard hit percentage indicate that the average isn’t bound to fall off, but it would be nice to see Cooper lift the ball more with only a 17.6% fly ball rate. Regardless, he’s hit six home runs and sports a .324 average against right handed pitching this year, which Miami is set to face in all seven games this week.

Mallex Smith (OF – Seattle Mariners)

Ownership: Yahoo 52% ESPN 66% CBS 62%

Seattle Mariners outfielder Mallex Smith continues to be under owned. Since his recall from AAA exactly a month ago, Smith has hit .269 with three home runs and ten stolen bases and cut his strikeout percentage from 28.9% to 24.1%. Smith should be owned in every roto and category league. Smith should be a good play this week regardless of format with a seven game slate of good matchups with three games against the Kansas City Royals and four games against the Baltimore Orioles at home.

Yandy Diaz (1B/3B – Tampa Bay Rays)

Ownership: Yahoo 37% ESPN 38% CBS 67%

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Yandy Diaz saw his ownership dip after he slowed down a bit and spent some time injured after getting hit by a pitch, but he seems to coming back into form with 13 hits in 29 at bats with two home runs in the last seven days. He should be owned in more than 37 percent of leagues and I believe he will continue to be a valuable contributor, particularly in points leagues over the course of the season.

James McCann (C – Chicago White Sox)

Ownership: Yahoo 38% ESPN 16% CBS 55%

White Sox catcher James McCann is hitting .324/.374/.479 on the year, making him a top 10 catcher in fantasy at this point in the season. The White Sox have continued to keep his bat in the lineup between catcher and designated hitter, starting in every one of the team’s last nine games. That’s the volume you want to see from the catching position, especially in points leagues. McCann should be owned at least in all twelve team leagues.
