Week 10 Waiver Wire Hitters

Waiver wire hitters to add for week 10 of fantasy baseball.

Oscar Mercado (OF – Cleveland Indians)

Ownership: Yahoo 29% ESPN 12% CBS 39%

Cleveland Indians outfielder Oscar Mercado was called up two weeks ago and has hit .304 with a home run and two steals since. The home run and steals have come in the last seven days. Over the last week, Mercado has hit out of the second spot in the lineup. Before his call-up, Mercado had been hitting .294 with 14 steals in 30 games in AAA. Mercado has a 23.5% line drive rate and with his speed, it’s possible that he can keep up the high average if he keeps the strikeouts in check, which currently sits at 21.2%. Mercado is an add in every roto league as he is projected to steal over ten bases from here on out.

Jackie Bradley Jr. (OF – Boston Red Sox)

Ownership: Yahoo 20% ESPN 35% CBS 23%

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has gotten off to an abysmal start to the season as shown by his .194 average but has shown some signs of life recently with a .298 average and all four of his home runs coming in the last two weeks. Bradley Jr. credits a recent adjustment to his swing for his turnaround and whether it’s sustainable or not remains to be seen as he’s been prone to hot and cold streaks. Bradley could hit another ten home runs and steal just as many bases, making him a worthy add in roto leagues if he’s available.

David Fletcher (2B/3B/SS – Los Angeles Angels)

Ownership: Yahoo 36% ESPN 48% CBS 52%

Los Angeles Angels infielder David Fletcher came into the season looking to build upon a rookie season in which he hit .275 with only one home run in 80 games. He’s had a hot bat in the last two weeks hitting .333 and .313 on the season with four home runs and four steals. Fletcher has made improvements to both his strikeout rate and walk rate, now with a 7.7% walk rate and 6.3% strikeout rate. Paired with a 27.5% line drive rate and improved 35% hard hit rate, Fletcher should be an excellent source of average and runs with the occasional home run and steal. Fletcher could make a good option at MI in both points and roto leagues of 12 teams and deeper, especially in daily formats as he will be playing shortstop during Andrelton Simmons’ IL stint and should have eligibility all over the infield with the exception of first base.

Josh Phegley (C – Oakland Athletics)

Ownership: Yahoo 48% ESPN 29% CBS 64%

Oakland A’s catcher Josh Phegley is enjoying a breakout season in which he is hitting .282 with seven home runs and league leading 33 RBI among catchers. Perhaps a swing adjustment is to thank as he has drastically decreased his groundball rate from 44.1% to 22.9% and increased his line drive rate from 14.7% to 30.5% while hitting the ball hard 36.8% of the time. This might be a good week in particular to pick up Phegley anywhere he is available as the Athletics have seven games this week with four game in Texas against the Rangers.

Nate Lowe (1B/DH – Tampa Bay Rays)

Ownership: Yahoo 3% ESPN 1% CBS 16%

So the first time Lowe was promoted didn’t quite work out for fantasy owners as his promotion didn’t last long. With the recent injury to Tommy Pham, Lowe was recalled and I am picking him back up where he is available and activated him where I’ve had him stashed. Lowe has only seen 38 plate appearances in the MLB this season and we’ve seen that it could take some time for prospects to adjust to MLB pitching. Lowe has the potential to help your fantasy teams by hitting for both average and power.
